Planning enterprise Wi-Fi coverage in hotels and warehouses

Hotels and warehouses break Wi-Fi in opposite ways. One is a capacity and guest-experience problem, the other a coverage and roaming problem — and both are decided by placement, not hardware.

Coverage and capacity are different requirements

Coverage means the signal reaches. Capacity means the signal still works when many devices use it at once. A quiet warehouse aisle is a coverage problem; a hotel conference room is a capacity problem; a hotel with both guest rooms and function space has both, in different parts of the same building.

Confusing the two is why sites end up with strong signal bars and unusable connections. Access point count follows whichever requirement dominates in each area, which is why one number for the whole building is rarely right.

What makes hotels difficult

Hotels have to serve rooms, corridors, restaurants, lobbies, pool areas and function rooms — each with different density and different guest expectations. Guests also arrive with their own devices and no patience for a captive portal that misbehaves.

Room walls, lift shafts, service risers and reinforced structures cut signal in ways that only show up when someone stands in the room and measures. Corridor-mounted access points serving rooms through walls are a reasonable design in some buildings and a poor one in others; the survey decides which.

What makes warehouses difficult

Metal racking, stock that changes height and density, cold rooms and long open spans make warehouse Wi-Fi unpredictable. A layout that works empty can fail once the racking is full, because the stock itself absorbs signal.

Handheld scanners are the real test. They are carried at walking pace along aisles, they hold weak connections stubbornly, and they are the first thing to fail when access point overlap and roaming are not planned.

  • Access points placed along and across aisles, accounting for racking as a barrier
  • Deliberate overlap so devices can hand over cleanly while moving
  • Coverage for goods-in, dispatch, yard and gatehouse, not just the main floor
  • Re-checking coverage after racking or layout changes

Roaming is what people actually complain about

Most "the Wi-Fi is bad" reports at large sites are roaming problems. A device clings to a distant access point instead of switching to a nearer one, and the user experiences a slow, dropping connection while standing under perfectly good hardware.

Roaming is tuned through access point placement, overlap, power levels and channel planning. It is not fixed by installing a more expensive access point in the same wrong place.

Cabling determines where access points can go

An access point can only be mounted where a cable can reach it, with switch power to serve it. Plan cabling and wireless together, or the survey's ideal positions will quietly become whatever positions were reachable.

For large sites this often means adding distribution points, not just access points — which is a cabling design question best answered before the wireless quotation is signed.

The internet connection is the ceiling

No amount of wireless work exceeds the connection behind it. If a hotel's guest complaints coincide with check-in peaks, or a warehouse's systems slow at dispatch time, the constraint may be the link rather than the Wi-Fi.

A good survey reports this honestly, because the alternative is selling access points that cannot fix the problem.
