Structured cabling designed, installed and documented

Structured cabling is the designed version of data cabling: one planned system serving the whole building, documented so anyone can work on it afterwards.

The difference shows up years later. An unplanned installation grows by accretion until nobody can trace a cable; a structured installation has a defined backbone, work areas, patching and labelling, so adding a floor or moving a department is routine work rather than an investigation.

What our structured cabling service covers

Everything below is part of the scope we agree in writing before work starts.

  • Design and planning

    A documented layout: where distribution points sit, how floors and blocks are served, how many outlets per work area, and how the system will grow.

  • Backbone and horizontal distribution

    Fibre or copper backbone between distribution points and floors, with horizontal runs out to work areas from each one.

  • Racks, cabinets and patching

    Racks or cabinets specified and built out with patch panels, management, power arrangement and cable dressing that stays workable.

  • Work area outlets

    Consistent outlet provision at desks and equipment positions, so a moved workstation does not require new cabling.

  • Containment and pathways

    Tray, trunking, conduit and riser pathways sized with spare capacity, so later additions do not mean re-doing containment.

  • Testing and link results

    Each link tested with results recorded per outlet, so the installation is handed over with evidence rather than assurances.

  • Labelling and as-built documentation

    A labelling scheme applied at outlet, patch panel and rack, plus documentation of what serves what.

Planning & design

What we work out before quoting

These are the decisions that determine whether the finished system is useful or merely installed.

Cabling outlives everything else
Switches, cameras and phones get replaced several times over the life of a cabling installation. Specifying for the equipment you will have later is worth the small extra cost now.
Category and media choice
The cable category and the copper/fibre split should follow the speeds, distances and PoE loads you expect — a decision made deliberately with you, not defaulted.
Distribution point placement
Where cabinets sit determines run lengths, containment routes and how easy future work will be. It is worth arguing about early.
Spare capacity
Spare outlets, spare containment space and spare patch positions are what let a building absorb change without a project.
Separation and interference
Routing away from power runs, machinery and heat sources is planned at design stage, not improvised while pulling cable.
Documentation is part of the deliverable
An installation without labelling and records is unfinished, however neatly it was pulled. Test results and as-built records are handed over with the system.
Coordination with other trades
Ceilings, partitions, power and air conditioning all interact with cabling routes, so sequencing with other contractors is agreed up front.

Frequently asked

What should I require from a structured cabling contractor?
A documented design before work starts, a defined outlet and containment schedule, testing results for every link, a labelling scheme applied at both ends, and as-built documentation at handover. If any of those are missing from a quotation, ask why.
Is structured cabling worth it for a small office?
For a handful of points, straightforward network cabling is usually enough. Once you have multiple rooms, floors or a rack, the design and documentation start paying for themselves at the first change.
Can you work to a consultant's or architect's design?
Yes. We install to an issued design, and we will raise anything in it that conflicts with site conditions rather than quietly working around it.
Can this be done in phases?
Yes, and it is common. The design defines the whole system so each phase fits the same structure instead of becoming another isolated installation.
