Structured cabling cost in Sri Lanka: what affects a quotation

Cabling quotations vary because the scope varies. Here is what genuinely changes the number, and which cheap-looking quotations are cheap because something is missing.

Cost per outlet is the wrong question on its own

It is tempting to reduce cabling to a price per point, and contractors will happily quote that way. The trouble is that a point in an open-plan office with accessible ceilings and a point at the far end of a factory are not the same product.

Compare total scope rather than unit rates, and pay attention to what is included around the cable — containment, testing, labelling and documentation are where quotations genuinely diverge.

Outlet count and spare capacity

The number of outlets is the base driver. Spare capacity — extra outlets, extra containment room, extra patch positions — adds a modest amount now and saves considerably at the first office change.

It is worth asking for the quotation to state spare capacity explicitly, because it is easy to omit and impossible to add cheaply later.

Cable category and copper versus fibre

Cable category affects material cost and should follow the speeds and Power over Ethernet loads you expect over the life of the installation — remembering that cabling typically outlives several generations of switches, cameras and phones.

Fibre becomes necessary where distances exceed practical copper limits, where blocks or floors must be linked, or where electrical noise makes copper unwise. Fibre runs bring their own termination and testing costs, which is why the copper/fibre split belongs in the design rather than in negotiation.

Containment and pathways

Trunking, conduit, tray and riser work is often the largest single line in a cabling quotation, and it is the first thing trimmed to make a number look attractive.

Cheap containment means cable draped where it should not be, difficulty adding anything later, and higher fault rates. Sizing containment with spare capacity is one of the few cabling decisions that pays back visibly.

Racks, patching and distribution points

Where the rack sits determines every cable length on site. Rack and cabinet build, patch panels, cable management, power arrangement and any additional distribution points on other floors all carry real cost.

Multiple distribution points usually cost more in equipment and less in cable, and they make a building far easier to extend. On a multi-storey site, that trade-off is worth discussing explicitly.

Testing, labelling and documentation

Per-link testing, a labelling scheme applied at both ends, and as-built records take time, and therefore appear in some quotations and not others.

They are also what makes the installation supportable. If one quotation is noticeably cheaper, check whether these are in the scope at all before treating the difference as a saving.

  • Per-link test results, one record per outlet
  • Labels at outlet, patch panel and rack
  • As-built drawings or schedules at handover

Site conditions and working hours

Occupied buildings, restricted working hours, high ceilings, solid walls, external routes between blocks and coordination with other trades all add labour. So does making good after installation in a finished space.

None of this is padding. A quotation that ignores it either has not seen the site or intends to raise it later as a variation.

Phasing to fit a budget

When the full scope cannot be funded at once, phasing works well — provided the whole system is designed first so each phase fits the same structure. Phasing without a design produces several unrelated installations and a higher total cost.

The usual sensible order is containment and backbone first, then work areas floor by floor.
